ANDY BURNHAM: Mayor addresses Scotland travel ban
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester held his latest COVID-19 press conference amid spiking rates and the recent Scotland travel ban.
He said he has received more than 50 emails to his office about this situation, with a number of them giving examples of how they have been impacted.
Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of "discourtesy bordering on contempt" after announcing a Manchester travel ban without consulting Members of Scottish Parliament first.
The ban prohibits people from Manchester and Salford travelling to Scotland and vice versa, adding to a pre-existing ban on Bolton. This came as a surprise to Andy Burnham, who said he had no warning of the announcement and has written a letter to the First Minister.
Nicola Sturgeon says the ban acts as a public health measure to keep her country ‘as safe as possible’ from the spread of Covid-19. However, Bev Hughes, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime said it would be impossible to enforce.
Mr Burnham added that a key issue coming out is the 'exit route'. This ban already applied to Bolton and the leader there wants to know 'where he stands', given that the borough's numbers are coming down adding that further restrictions
