ANDY BURNHAM: Mayor of GM responds to ‘freedom day’ announcement

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, held his latest fortnightly press conference, the day after government announced a plan to end to all Covid restrictions from July 19.

He was joined by Sir Richard Leese, chair of the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership who gave an overview of Greater Manchester’s response to the impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

On Monday night, Ministers confirmed their plan to scrap mask-wearing rules in public spaces, shops and transport on July 19, also known as ‘freedom day’, as well as bringing an end to social distancing along with the reopening of nightclubs and major events.

Mayor Andy Burnham spoke out against the scrapping of mask-wearing rules on public transport, adding that they will still be encouraging people in the city-region to remain wearing masks in certain spaces, such as public transport.

He told a press conference on Tuesday: “Some people still think it’s about protecting themselves when they’re wearing that face covering in a crowded or confined space.

It is about protecting other people, particular people who may be at greatest risk, people undergoing chemotherapy, people who have compromised immune systems, or people with disabilities and older people.

The point that seems to have been lost in recent times is that some people taking their own freedoms from July 19 might take away other people’s freedoms.”

We asked if Mr Burnham was shocked at the news regarding face-masks come July 19.
