ANDY BURNHAM: Mayor of Greater Manchester against local lockdowns

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, along with David Greenhalgh, Leader of Bolton Council have said that ‘local lockdown’s don’t work’.

It comes after government advised against all but essential travel in and out of areas hardest hit by the Indian coronavirus variant, including Bolton.

Ministers have since backtracked over the travel advice for the eight areas hit hardest by the Indian virus variant, after a change in guidance led to confusion.

In the press conference Mayor Andy Burnham was adamant that he believes ‘local lockdowns do not work’.

The amended advice asks people to minimise travel into and out of the eight worst areas, including Bolton.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps admitted communication over the Covid advice could have been "clearer".

Mr Shapps said the government would "learn from that", but added he did not believe the change in advice was "actually all that complicated".

"This is not a new lockdown, this is not law, this is just some advice," he told BBC Breakfast, adding the purpose was "to remind people that they happen to be living in areas where the risk of transmission is higher".

The Leader of Bolton Council, David Greenhalgh shared the same views as Mr Burnham when it came to local lockdowns.

With the vast majority of cases among the under-30s, David says he hopes the government will listen to Greater Manchester's ask about bringing back the use of face masks in schools.
