CITY STAR: Phil Foden mural mooted for Stockport streets

A mural celebrating the achievements of England football star Phil Foden could be coming to the Stockport streets where he honed his skills.

The midfield maestro is a regular starter for Premier League champions Manchester City and was also part of the England squad that thrilled the nation at last summer’s European Championships.

Now there are moves to create a fitting tribute to the Stockport-born star who looks set for a trophy-laden career at the very top of the game.

While already a global superstar, his achievements have not been overlooked closer to home.

Edgeley and Cheadle Heath councillor Matt Wynne called for his talents to be recognised at the latest full meeting of Stockport council.

Speaking at the town hall, he hailed the 21-year-old’s contribution to England’s Euros campaign – a tournament which saw the men’s national team reach their first major final since 1966.

Addressing regeneration chief Coun David Meller, he continued: “Given Mr Foden honed his trade on the streets of Edgeley and Cheadle Heath, could I ask the council to possibly consider – in conjunction with both neighbourhoods and the three ward councillors – the commission of public artwork in our ward that would symbolise and display what local lads and young people in general do achieve – and can achieve – through the possession and display of the qualities and traits of teamwork, respect, graft and determination.”

Coun Meller said that,  should it be in his gift , he would be ‘very happy’ for someone to ‘paint a mural of Stockport’s Iniesta’ – a reference to the legendary ex-Barcelona and Spain midfielder.

The Manchester United fan told Coun Wynne: “If you have a space or an idea of where it could go, I’m happy to have that discussion.”

Before adding: “I think what you have said is entirely right, in terms of what he has achieved for England and Manchester City, albeit for the wrong team.”

Coun Meller also told the meeting that he worked at Stockport Academy while the star was there as a ‘little wee lad’ and had fond memories of the ‘amazing’ youngster ‘running rings around everyone’.

“You’ve absolutely go my support, Coun Wynne,” he added.

Phil Foden’s last appearance for his country was in last Saturday’s 5-0 win over Andorra as part of England’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

Stockport full council met at the town hall on Thursday night (October 7).
