NEW SHOPS: Reuse shops set up to cut down on 1.1m tonnes of waste

Three new shops are opening to try and reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill each year.

The reuse stores are set to offer customers pre-loved items to give people a more environmentally-friendly option.

Waste management company SUEZ, who currently process around 1.1 million tonnes of domestic waste in Greater Manchester, are leading the project.

The city-region’s new reuse shops are set to significantly reduce this figure, through the repurposing and selling of waste which would have otherwise gone to landfill.

The shops themselves are even repurposed, made entirely out of shipping containers.

David Palmer-Jones, of SUEZ, said: “As a company, we are committed to maximising the positive impacts of our business on the environment, the local economy and the communities that we work in.

“Reuse is a huge part of this, with items being diverted from waste and given a second lease of life, benefiting those in need.”

Coordinator Gary Fleet, who led the shipping container conversion for Lion Containers, says: “Utilizing one-trip shipping containers was a perfect choice for this environmental project, as not only do they suit Manchester’s contemporary landscape, but they are also a firmly eco- friendly choice.

“Taking one-trip shipping containers and converting them into these reuse shops demonstrates that protecting the environment was at the core in every element of this project.”

The sites are estimated to save 600 tonnes of items from going to waste each year and are available to visit now. Current sites are open at Woodhouse Lane in Altrincham, Arkwright Street in Oldham and Boysnope Wharf in Eccles.
