SELF-ISOLATE: Government announces £12 million plan to support people to self-isolate

1. The government has announced a plan costing £12million to try and support people to self-isolate in areas with higher coronavirus infection rates.

Greater Manchester is among nine areas of England where a wide range of 'trailblazing' tactics will be rolled out.

Social care support and translation services will also be available.

It is hoped the schemes will encourage more people to get tested and self-isolate if required - Health Secretary Matt Hancock said this was "vital" in the fight against new Covid variants.

2. Rochdale has been awarded £17m from the Future High Streets fund to revitalise the town. The funding from government is more than anywhere in the country bar Grimsby and Woolwich.

The cash will go towards phase two of the £50m flagship Riverside development - which has already brought big names such as M&S, Next and Nandos to the town as well as a Reel Cinema.

This £50m scheme will see a new hotel and hundreds of ‘city living’ apartments built next to the Smith Street retail and leisure destination.

The news has been welcomed by Councillor John Blundell, cabinet member for economy and communications.

3. Planning permission to knock down a pub in Irlam, making way for new flats, has been refused by Salford council but the demolition could still go ahead.

Developer Scott Camm has lodged an appeal leaving the decision with a planning inspector.
