PROFILE PRESSURE: £4bn spent a year trying to achieve the perfect look across social media and dating apps

According to new research by dating app Plenty Of Fish, British adults spend more than £4bn a year trying to achieve the perfect look across social media and dating apps.

The survey of 2,000 adults found living through a pandemic has only exacerbated the pressure to look a certain way, with over half (55%) of Brits feeling that lockdown has had a negative impact on their self-esteem. The results revealed that, individually, those surveyed averaged £269 per year.

Of the 2,000 adults surveyed, 72% said they spent more time scrolling through social media feeds of influencers and celebrities whilst stuck at home during lockdown, with 67% admitting that they now edit their photos and use virtual filters more than they used to pre pandemic.

Jo Hemmings, behavioural psychologist, believes despite having digital editing tools at our disposal for some time, it’s still shocking to see just how much time, money and effort is invested in the hope of living up to an ideal of beauty that is totally unrealistic.

To help alleviate some of the pressure, Plenty Of Fish has partnered with behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings to provide guidance on boosting self-confidence and encouraging Brits to embrace their most authentic selves.
